Encouraging people to green up - 2/3rds of gardens are paved or partially paved

The Putney Society has launched a competition to find the best front garden, window box or planter in Putney - although in this inaugural year they will be covering only those properties in post codes SW15 1 and SW15 2.

You can enter by nominating yourself, a friend or a neighbour (with their permission).



Prizes will be National Garden Vouchers:
Best garden £100 (runner up £25)
Best window box or planter £100 (runner up £25)

The three judges are Fiona Crumley who has been RHS judge, Clare Savage, a professional horticulturalist who has worked on BBC gardening programmes and Putney resident and editor of this site Sandi Bloomfield.

Why do front gardens matter and what impact do they have?
⅔ of front gardens are now wholly or partially paved over - what impact does this have?
* garden plants and trees intercept pollutants in the air, reducing exposure to poor air quality.
* garden plants and trees catch the rain and slow the run-off, reducing the pressure on
storm drains.
* soil naturally absorbs rainwater, reducing the risk of flooding and thereby maintaining the
aquifer.
* more animal species are supported in cities and domestic gardens than in rural areas –
this is particularly true of vital pollinators.
* the presence of gardens improves psychological and physical wellbeing.
