Local influencers submit priorities for 10-year Local Plan consultation

Putney’s developers, architects and top firms have come up with priorities for the town centre - which includes a second train station entrance, a pedestrianised square at Lacy Road and more cultural spaces to encourage people into the area.

Organised by Positively Putney Business Improvement District (BID), the priorities are now being submitted to Wandsworth Council’s 10-year Local Plan consultation.

They include:
• Encouraging more people to the town centre through more culture, arts and community spaces. Conditions should be placed on new developments to have proper community spaces included in their plans – plans that go beyond green areas or places to sit.

• Encouraging more walking and cycling into the town centre through improved cycle parking facilities; pavement widening on the high street and more seating facilities for elderly people.

• Cutting congestion at peak travel times with a second entrance for Putney train station.

• Pedestrianising Lacy Road and open it up into a town square, and pedestrianising the Embankment so people can enjoy the riverside and not use it as a car park.

• Installation of ‘smart bins’ which use sensors to automatically sort waste and recycling and send alerts when full and ready for collection.

Nicola Grant, Executive Director of Putney Business Improvement District, said: “Wandsworth Council are putting together their Local Plan for the next 10 years and we got together with local developers, architects, lawyers and other influencers, to discuss our priorities for the area.

“I’m excited by the ideas we’ve submitted – they are innovative, practical and will help clean up the high street, reduce congestion and drive footfall to local businesses. Ultimately, with the correct measures our town centre will thrive, and the Business Improvement District will do everything it can to make sure Putney secures much needed facilities like pedestrianised areas, arts spaces and improved cycle parking facilities.”
