The Putney branch of Barclays Bank is to close later this year as part of a broader retrenchment by the financial services group.

It is one of 10 branches across the country that were named on a list to be axed released this Friday (2 June). Local customers should have received a letter informing them that the branch at 60 Putney High Street is to stop serving at noon on Friday 1 September.

Two other branches in London will be closing in the same month along with those in Leominster, Cambridge, and Wellingborough as well as St. Andrews in Scotland. The losses will bring the number of closures announced by Barclays up to 132 for this year and it follows the announcement of 12 closures announced last month.

The bank has to show to the regulator that there is not a need for the service in the area of a closure and this is usually justified by a claim that most customers have now switched to online or phone banking services.

The Putney area, like many parts of London and the rest of the country, has been hit with a string of closures of banks and building societies leading to a danger of it becoming what is described as a ‘banking desert’ where it is difficult to get in person banking services for customers unwilling or unable to bank online.

Among the closure over recent years have been the departure of TSB from the High Street in April 2021 followed by Nationwide in September of that year, and HSBC is due to shut its Upper Richmond Road branch this August.

Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland have also announced branch closures this week.
