Margaret Calcott-James served as Mayor of Wandsworth in the eighties

Tribute has been paid to Margaret Calcott-James who has sadly passed away at the age of 94. She served as a councillor for East Putney and was mayor of the borough in 1982.

Mrs Calcott-James was awarded the status of Honorary Alderman of the Borough of Wandsworth in 1998 after she stepped down from the council having given many years of service to the people of Putney.

As well as serving as a local councillor she also served as an elected member of the Inner London Education Authority between 1986 and 1990. She was also chairman of local amenity group The Putney Society and following her retirement spent her later years living in Gloucestershire.

The Mayor of Wandsworth Cllr Leslie McDonnell said, “Margaret’s passing is very sad news to all those who knew her and admired and respected her.

“She was a doughty and tireless fighter on behalf of Putney, not only as a local councillor but also in her role as chairman of the Putney Society. She was one of its strongest advocates and never failed to stand up for its residents and businesses.

“She was a very popular, hardworking and dedicated public servant who devoted her life to helping others. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by all those who were fortunate enough to have known her.”

She leaves behind two daughters, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her funeral was held in Gloucestershire last Friday (6 April).
