A ten mile pursuit of a stolen vehicle travelling at speeds in excess of 130mph ended in a residential street in Putney in the early hours of Tuesday morning (17 July).

The car was being tracked by officers from the Roads and Transport Unit of the Metropolitan Police and from Sutton Borough after they received a report of a stolen vehicle from outside a property in Kingsmead Avenue, Worcester Park at 12.14am.

The vehicle was located and pursued by officers but failed to stop. They called in assistance from the National Police Air Service who safely followed the vehicle from the air in a helicopter across London. The noise of the helicopter hovering as part of the search woke up many people in the Putney area.

The driver and a passenger eventually got out of the car in Fawe Park Road Putney at around 12.50am. The passenger, a 24-year-old man was detained nearby by members of the Met Task Force. The driver, also aged 24, made off and was stopped and arrested by officers near East Putney Underground Station at about 1:20am.

The vehicle was subsequently returned to its owners.
