Thomas Crowther raising funds for local charity Home-Start Wandsworth
9 year old Thomas Crowther
Nine-year-old Thomas Crowther has challenged himself to cycle a marathon through the Surrey Hills to raise funds for Home-Start Wandsworth*, this Saturday (20 June).
Thomas told PutneySW15.com, “During lockdown I wasn’t very busy so I thought it might be a good idea to raise some money for charity. Home-Start Wandsworth is the charity we support as a family because it raises money to help those in need with young children who are struggling to cope. It is easy to forget about the smaller charities because lots of people are raising money for the bigger charities. I realise that during lockdown life is very difficult for some families and we do not want to let them down.”
Thomas' father is Mike who works at Warren Estate Agents in Putney said: "I’m extremely proud of Thomas. The whole idea, choice of charity and drive behind this has been entirely of his own making. My wife Nicky is going to accompany him and his sister Evie and I will be cheering him along at various stages and driving them home at the end!"
Linda Hayllar, a trustee for Home-Start Wandsworth and Putney resident said: "We are delighted Thomas has chosen to support Home-Start Wandsworth. Much of our fundraising activity this year has been curtailed due to Covid-19 whilst the demand for our services to support struggling families in the Borough has increased and so we are so grateful for the money raised by Thomas which will enable us to continue our work with local families. Thank you Thomas and good luck!"

* Home-Start Wandsworth is a local charity which provides practical and emotional support to families with young children across the Borough of Wandsworth. They recruit and train volunteers (a number of whom live in Putney) who go on to support families who find themselves in challenging situations dealing with issues such as post natal depression or other mental health issues, social isolation, disability, financial or housing difficulties.
Linda told this website: "Every Home-Start volunteer is trained to work alongside families to give confidential support and friendship. We also run support and training groups and organise holiday activities. During the Covid-19 crisis we have adjusted our service to continue to give practical and emotional support to local families as they navigate the unique challenges that this situation has presented."
Please contact Home-Start Wandsworth via their website if you would like more information about volunteering or fundraising for them.
Please also get in touch via their website if you are, or know of, a family that is struggling for any reason during these uncertain times to find out if Home-Start Wandsworth can assist.
