Left handed batsman Dawid Malan struck his maiden Test century on the first day of the third Test - giving hope to England's Ashes defence.

In an interview with BBC Sport he said: "It's not every day you score a hundred for your country, it was pretty emotional. I was trying to keep the tears in."

With Australia 2-0 up, England must avoid defeat at the WACA in Perth, a ground where they have not won since 1978. Dawid was eventually out for 140, which included 19 fours and a six. His innings had barely started when England found themselves in trouble on 131-4 but a record breaking double century fifth wicket partnership with Johnny Bairstow helped England reach a respectable total.

Born in Roehampton, Dawid moved to South Africa for his schooling but returned afterwards to coach and play cricket. Hemade his Test debut against South Africa in the summer. Cricket is in his blood, Dawid's father Dawid Malan, Sr., played cricket in South Africa for Western Province and Northern Transvaal.
