Local artist Amy Pennington invites you to get involved in foreshore art
Some of the mudlarking finds from Putney foreshore
Artist Amy Pennington has been commissioned by Tideway to work alongside the community of Putney Bridge to produce an artwork that will feature on the temporary hoardings that will be running alongside the river and the Tideway construction site. Amy has developed the idea of '14 days of washing up', from 13th August for 14 days she will be at Putney Foreshore at low tide Mudlarking and informally sharing her finds with passers-by.
Steve Brooker, star of the History Channel show 'Mudmen' inspires local volunteers
Mudlarking has been around since the 18th century and now has turned into an enthusiastic past time for Londoners. Mudlarking is the activity of looking for finds in the mud and due to Thames mud being anaerobic (without oxygen) it means that all archaeological finds are preserved so you may end up finding a Victorian shoe, a clay pipe or a broken BlackBerry phone!
Three more workshops will take place in August and the next one is 'Drawing the river. Further workshops will include a hands on session exploring the Battersea Arts Centre's (BAC) Moving Museum, and a session dedicated to archiving all the finds and stories.
WORKSHOP 2 : DRAWING THE RIVER with Amy Pennington

‘Drawing the river’ encourages participants to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the Thames using drawing as a tool of expression. You do not need to have any prior drawing experience to take part in this session the workshop itself will be led by Amy Pennington who will be introducing participants to different drawing techniques such as mark making, sound and blindfolded drawings, relief drawings and lots of fun ways to explore drawing and the river and all it’s surroundings. The drawings that are made at the sessions will be fed back into the design of the hoardings. After the group has finished their drawings on the Thames they will go back to St Mary’s Church and share drawings with each other with tea and cake.
Open to all but children must be accompanied by an adult. Part of the session will take place outdoors, please wear suitable clothing. All workshops are free and there is no booking necessary, however places will be filled on first come first served basis.
