A week of environmental initiatives to improve the carbon footprint of the school

Putney's MP Justine Greening will attend an early morning assembly at Putney High School on Monday 24 September to launch a week of practical and academic initiatives (24 – 28 September 2018) that aims to both educate students and have a direct, measurable impact on everything from pollution levels to a reduction in waste and recycling within the school.
Throughout the week, Junior and Senior school pupils will participate in: * Tree planting * Reducing paper waste * Reducing plastic waste * Reducing food waste * Minimising pollution - They will be counting the number of cars that drive past the school and encouraging parents and pupils to use public transport, cycle, scooter or walk to school. (There will be a number of meeting points where teachers and prefects will collect pupils and walk them to school.) Discussion topics in class including: Fracking and Eco-technology |
The school will be collecting data before and after the week of initiatives, to demonstrate how far it has managed to reduce pollution, energy usage and its carbon footprint generally over the course of the week.
Deputy Head (Pastoral) Heidi Armstrong said, “The scheme will involve the whole school community in showing how just five days of small change in both mindset and behaviour can actually make a large and lasting impact. It’s the starting point for positive change not only in attitudes, but improvement to our environment both locally, and more widely.”
