Jonathan Brough invited to the Discovery Education Summer Institute

A Putney Headteacher will be flying to America this summer, after earning a place at a prestigious teaching event. Jonathan Brough, Headmaster of Hurlingham School, is one of five British teachers invited to this year’s Discovery Education Summer Institute – one of the most celebrated education programmes in the US.

Chosen for his enthusiasm in teaching with technology, Jonathan will fly to the States in July, where he will join over 100 educators at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
Now in its 13th year, the Discovery Education Summer Institute connects teachers from around the world to share the latest ideas and technology through professional development and networking. Entry is by invitation only, and delegates are recognised as digital leaders.

Jonathan said: “I’m delighted to have been chosen to attend the Discovery Education Summer Institute. The opportunity for networking, and to share best practice with educators from around the world, will be so valuable and I know that the experience will benefit our school hugely. Today’s pupils will grow up to be global citizens, and everything we teach them should be informed by that worldwide panorama. I’m looking forward to discovering new ideas, technology and culture and to sharing these to enhance pupil learning here at Hurlingham.”

Chris Nash, Head of Community at Discovery Education UK said: “We’re delighted to invite Jonathan to join the 2018 Discovery Education Summer Institute. His experience in the US will benefit the whole school, providing opportunities to work with teachers from around the world and bringing innovation to every classroom.”

Just five UK places were available at this year’s event, and British primary school teachers were invited to apply by making a video. Entrants were asked to capture how they are transforming teaching and learning, and the judges were particularly impressed with Jonathan’s short film.

Joining Jonathan in the US are fellow UK winners: Gavin Sharp from St Bede’s Catholic Primary School in Rotherham, Kate Penarski from Ashbridge School in Preston, Hannah White from Meadowpark School in Wiltshire and Jenny Lovelock from Newnham Junior School in Hillingdon.

The exciting summer programme is the flagship event of the Discovery Education Community, one of the world’s largest professional learning communities. Discovery Education helps schools create the dynamic digital learning environments that prepare students for success beyond the classroom.
