Company says that all 62 employees will be relocated to other stores

Marks and Spencer has announced that it is closing its store on Putney High Street in April. All 62 colleagues who work at the store will be moving to nearby stores.

The company say that the closure is part of their programme to 'modernise its UK store estate to better meet the changing needs of customers'.

M&S say that they remain committed to serving customers in South West London through a number of other locations including Southfields Foodhall, Fulham Island Simply Food and Barnes Foodhall, all located under two miles away. These stores all give customers the option to collect and return their Clothing and Home orders from M&S.com free of charge.

Sacha Berendji, Director of Retail at Marks & Spencer, said, “We’re committed to transforming M&S for our customers, colleagues and shareholders. Stores will always be an integral part of our customer experience, alongside M&S.com, but we have to ensure we have the right offer in the right locations.

“We believe these changes are vital for the future of M&S and we will continue to accelerate the programme, taking tough but necessary decisions, as we focus on making M&S special.”

Jayne Saunders, M&S Head of Region for South West London, said: “This is something we’ve given a great deal of consideration to and is not a decision we’ve taken lightly. We’ve got a great team in Putney and I’m pleased they will stay with us and continue to serve our customers from stores nearby.”

As well as Putney, M&S has announced five other stores, all outside of London, that will close by the end of April and eight that are proposed for closure.
