Four hundred residents signed a petition objecting to the plans for locally listed house

Campaigners are celebrating after the application to demolish a gothic style building in Roehampton has been withdrawn. Four hundred people signed a petition objecting to the planning application. Steve Fannon, who set up the petition, told this website: "Thankfully the madness of this planning application has been withdrawn. 66 Alton Road is an integral part of Roehampton's heritage and what a travesty to Roehampton should this have been permitted to go ahead. A massive thanks to all who challenged this and fingers crossed there won't be a follow up application".

The unusual detached house at 66 Alton Road is locally listed and part of a conservation area but planning permission was sought by Denton Homes Ltd to replace it with two new blocks containing 24 one and two bedroom flats.

An objection Roehampton Housing Association stated:"We object to the Application and the proposal to demolish a building of artistic merit and to replace it with two unattractive over­large buildings of no architectural merit, for the purpose of cramming as many housing units as possible on to the small site at No 66 Alton Road."
