Santander has announced that its Putney branch is one of 111 across the country it is to close this year.

The bank at 80-90 Putney High Street is set to serve its final customer at 4pm on 29 July.

Santander says that its analysis has shown that there are only 79 customers that have transacted with them six or more times in the year and use the Putney branch exclusively.

It says other customers have access to telephone and banking services or use other branches within the network as well as Putney.

The data was gathered between July and December 2019 to avoid more normal branch usage as opposed to that experienced in 2020 during the pandemic when in-bank transactions fell by 50%

There will be 840 staff affected by the decision nationally but the bank has said it would try to find them other jobs within the organisation.

Adam Bishop, head of branches at Santander said, “Branch usage by customers has fallen considerably over recent years so we have made the difficult decision to consolidate our presence in areas where we have multiple branches relatively close together."

The bank’s nearest remaining branches will be in Richmond and Hammersmith.
