As part of Tideway’s Art on the Tideway programme, artists are being called upon to help design a piece of work to adorn hoardings around the super sewer site in Putney.

The successful artist will help choose local community groups and work with them to create the design that will form a perimeter around the construction site in the west of the city, which is one of 24 sites being used to build the 25km Thames Tideway Tunnel in London.

The design will be influenced by the historic of the River Thames in Putney, using the artist’s own interpretation within their proposal. Tideway is looking for elements that relate to its project to clean up the river with components including water, movement, time, ecology and place to inform the approach in addition to the rich historical context.

David Miles, Tideway’s project manager for the Putney Embankment Foreshore site, said: “Putney is an area with a rich history and heritage revolving around the River Thames. From the Putney Debates to the famous Oxford and Cambridge boat race, there is a huge historic legacy on which to build and develop a really exciting piece of work. We look forward to seeing the ideas put forward and welcome applications from artists with an interest in the area.”

Three shortlisted artists will be provided with a small fee to develop their proposals for presentation to a selection panel. The successful artist will receive a fee of £6,100 (plus VAT) including all expenses and workshop costs. Fabrication costs will be met by the fabricator. The successful artist may need a current DBS (or be willing to obtain one) and be available to start as soon as possible.

The artwork will be on show for around two years.

Tideway welcomes applications from artists working in all disciplines with experience of working with community groups. Applications from artists based in or with a good knowledge of the Putney area and its community are particularly encouraged.

The deadline for applications is 12.00pm Sunday 7 May 2017.
