At Putney WI we are a group of women from all walks of life who come together at least once a month to listen to talks, to be creative, to try out new activities, to meet friends and to make new ones.

From October we shall be holding our meetings in The Duke’s Head. We are a small but growing group, one that is big on friendship, fundraising, and finding different things to do together; something for everyone.

This is reflected in our range of guest speakers. From the outset our guest presenters have covered a wide range of topics, from ceramics and crochet to the Royal School of Needlework and the history of jewellery, from opera to hand bell ringing, from the London Air Ambulance to self-defence, from making iced flowers and cloth flowers to the puppeteer behind Lady Penelope. And let us not forget the wine tasting evening, we like to be educated on all fronts.

Our summer outings have been both educative and fun; fascination at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, informative at the Royal Courts of Justice and Fulham Palace; reflective when we participated in planting the ceramic poppies at the Tower of London, to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.

We are a busy lot. Subgroups have been tried and some abandoned, but at the moment we have a very successful Visits Group who venture to places in London, some familiar some less so - a 5-hour breakfast at the top of the Walkie Talkie Building, the Recycling Plant in Wandsworth to mention a couple. There is a Craft group, a Cinema and Theatre group, which as well as seeing productions in Putney, had an interesting evening at Beating the Retreat in Horseguards Parade. We have a Walking group and a pub quiz team that does well on the absurd final question, winning several hundred pounds towards branch activities and our chosen local charities.

Annually we support a different local group in both financial and practical ways by providing foodstuff for the local Food Bank and by making over 100 chicks for Trinity Hospice as well as several twiddlemuffs for those with Alzheimers. We hold Book, Bake and Make Sales which are a staple fundraising and social event. We also have occasional stalls at various fairs in Putney. Our recent Curry Night proved to be popular and tasty.

We meet on the 3rd Monday of each month except in August when we have our summer outing. Our meetings begin at 7.30pm and consist of socialising, information and discussion and a presentation by a speaker sometimes with active participation.

Come along to the Duke’s Head on Putney Embankment and see for yourself.
