The scheme has been drawn up following concerns from local residents and councillors about drivers using the area as a cut through to avoid congestion on Roehampton Lane.

The limit is aimed at discouraging rat running, reducing vehic le  speeds, cutting accidents and improving the environment for pedestrians and cyclists.

The area affected is bounded by Upper Richmond Road to the north, Putney Park Lane to the east, Roehampton Lane to the west and Ponsonby Road, Medfield Street and Putney Heath to the south.

The plans will be considered by the planning and transportation overview and scrutiny committee on January 13, 2010. If approved, the council's traffic engineers would carry out a consultation with local residents and business.

Wandsworth's planning spokesman Guy Senior said:
"We share local people's concerns about traffic cutting through Dover House Road to avoid queues on Roehampton Lane.  Bringing the speed limit down to 20mph sh ould help prevent this behaviour and make the entire area much safer for pedestrian and cyclists."

If approved, the scheme costs would be met by Transport for London (TfL). To view the full report visit www.wandsworth.gov.uk/osc/planning - look at the agenda for January 13, report number 10 – 53.
