Local parent governor and landlady Becky Newman has set up monthly bike rides to encourage local children to get on their bikes, meet new friends and get some exercise.

Becky told this website: " I am a parent governor at my son's primary school, Our Lady of Victories. Part of my role is to promote safe, active and sustainable travel. I have been working closely with Wandsworth council and have started a monthly bike ride on the first Sunday of each month. Two have taken place so far and have followed the tow path down to Hammersmith and back up to Putney through Bishop's Park. They have been a huge success. They are led by trained bike leaders from Wandsworth. Children are shown basic bike maintenance and taught how to cycle safely".

Starting off as an event for pupils and parents of Our Lady Of Victories, Becky is now expanding the scheme and is trying to get neighbouring schools involved, as well as all other children in the wider community.

The next ride takes place this coming Sunday 6th March - it begins at her pub, The Bricklayer's Arms, Waterman Street at 2.30pm. This ride will head up towards Wimbledon Common, via the back roads of Putney Hill. There will be a break on the common for play and refreshment.

There must be an accompanying adult for each child and everyone must wear a helmet.
