Popular theatrical society presents Betty Blue Eyes
In what has become a recent trend, PLOS is once again the first local dramatic society to be granted performing rights for a hit musical, and will be presenting the London amateur premiere of Betty Blue Eyes at Putney Arts Theatre from 1-4 June. Based on the Alan Bennett-penned film, A Private Function, and with music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, Betty Blue Eyes is set in 1947’s Austerity Britain, and originally starring Sarah Lancashire (Joyce) and Reece Shearsmith (Gilbert) when it ran in the West End in 2011. The Prime Minister has promised fair shares for all, but in the little town of Shepardsford, local officials feather their own nests by taking far more than their own fair share, whilst humble chiropodist Gilbert Chilvers is still struggling to bring home the bacon for wife Joyce. With rationing and unemployment taking its toll, the only light on the horizon is the impending marriage of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Members of the Town Council are fattening up a highly illegal pig called Betty for a lavish banquet in honour of the royal couple – this very private function is going to be the social event of the season - but when the expected invitation fails to arrive, Gilbert and Joyce take matters into their own hands. Tickets: £16/14 available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/PLOS
