The Putney Music Society is a society of classical music enthusiasts who meet fortnightly at the Dryburgh Hall at Putney Leisure Centre from September 2019 until April 2020.

On the 4 November BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, Nicola Benedetti CBE is coming to Putney. Nicola won the competition at 16 and has continued not only as one of today's top-flight violinists, but as an eloquent ambassador for the vital importance of music in education. She talks to Andrew Neill.
The Society enjoys a membership of over two hundred members, some of whom have a considerable knowledge of music while others have very little, but all share a great love of music.
This season they are welcoming: -
David Nettle, Richard Markham, Carolyn Sampson, Ian Partridge, Nicola Benedetti, Lesley Garret, Chi-chi Nwanoku, Marc-Andre Hamelin, Brett Dean, Heather Betts, David Pickard (Director of the Proms), Oliver Soden, David Mellor, , Stephen Walsh, Martin Neary, Andrew Keener and Peter Avis who will be talking about their careers, experiences and anything and everything. Interspersed with recorded musical excerpts (on excellent Hi-Fi equipment).
The meetings generally start at 19:45 and finish at 21:45,with Refreshments are available at half time. To join for the whole year it is only £35 (which works out at only £2.69 a meeting – exceptionally good value for money! Visitors per meeting are £8 and Young Persons are FREE!

Virtuoso Ambassador. Since her success at the age of 16 in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, Nicola Benedetti CBE has continued not only as one of today's top-flight violinists, but as an eloquent ambassador for the vital importance of music in education. She talks to Andrew Neill.

Diva assoluta. The soprano Lesley Garrett CBE needs no introduction as a household name in the world of opera, combining accessibility to a wide range of audiences with a fiercely uncompromising approach to her art. She talks to Peter Avis.
2 December
Playing for Diversity. One of today's most familiar figures as a player on the concert platform (for 30 years she was the principal double bass with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment), as a broadcaster and as the founder member of Chineke! the orchestra committed to racial diversity, Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE talks about her diverse career to Clive Myrie of BBC News.

6 January
Piano Benchmarc. The Canadian pianist and composer Marc-André Hamelin, renowned for the breadth of his repertoire from the great classics to the immense virtuoso challenges of ‘golden age' pianism including Godowsky, Alkan and Feinberg, talks to Andrew Keener.
20 January
Artistic Fusion. The composer Brett Dean and his artist wife Heather Betts talk to Putney Music's vice-president Piers Lane about their lives, careers and mutual inspiration.
3 February
Something in the Big Round Building. With his experience as Chief Executive of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the European Arts Festival, David Pickard talks to Ian Partridge about his career as General Director of Glyndebourne and his present role as Controller of the BBC Proms.
17 February
The Biography. If you only read one ‘life' of a musician this year, make sure it's Oliver Soden's ground-breaking book on Sir Michael Tippett. Sharing the platform with the author to talk about this hugely readable and scholarly study will be our president David Cairns who was involved with several of Sir Colin Davis' recording sessions of Tippett's music when working at Philips Records in the 1970s.
2 March
David Mellor. Once again, we welcome back our vice-president David Mellor with another of his highly popular presentations.
16 March
On the Air and Off the Page. For some 50 years Stephen Walsh has been among the most vividly communicative of broadcasters, authors and critics. His biographies of Stravinsky and Mussorgsky remain as touchstones, and an acclaimed study of Debussy was published last year. This evening he talks to his friend and contemporary at Caius College Cambridge, Putney Music's vice-president Martin Neary.
