The Putney Society join with Friends of Wandsworth Park in unique initiative
The Putney Society and the Friends of Wandsworth Park have joined together to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Green Canopy Initiative. They have purchased four special trees to plant in Wandsworth Park and on 22 February, four local schools, Brandlehow, Hurlingham, The Roche and St Joseph’s joined Fleur Anderson M.P., the Friends and members of the Society to plant them. The trees were Davida involucrata (Handkerchief Tree), Paulownia Tomentosa (Foxglove Tree), Pterocarya fraxinifolia (Caucasian Wing Nut Tree) and Sophora japonica (Japanese Pagoda Tree). To add to this celebration of trees, Enable Leisure and Culture, the organisation that takes care of Wandsworth’s parks, has purchased three Prunus (Cherry tree) for the Park and these were also planted at the same time. The Friends of Wandsworth Park and the Putney Society expressed their thanks to Enable for facilitating the purchase of the four trees and arranging for the planting. The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. The Putney S ociety’s website contains more information about many other local issues.
