A host of events taking place across the festive season
December 5, 2023 There is a host of events taking place in the Putney and Roehampton area for the Christmas season. The festivities will be kicked off on Friday 24 November with the Putney BID Christmas lights switch on. The event will include a line-up of performers on the community stage from local Putney schools, dance, and drama groups from 4pm to 7pm. The festive lights will be officially switched on by Joseph Coello, author and poet at 6pm in Church Square, just off Putney High Street. The following day, Saturday 25 November, there will be a chance to see the Putney BID Ice Sculpture Trail, weather permitting, from 10am to 4pm. One of the UK’s leading experts Icebox will be transforming Putney Town Centre with 18 ice sculptures. Find out more information about the Putney Ice Sculpture Trail. Roehampton will be turning on its festive lights on Saturday 30 November. They will be officially switched on by the Mayor of Wandsworth at 4pm at Danebury Avenue. The full programme for the day is as follows: 3.30pm - Nolita Golding (local salsa singer) leads modern Christmas songs 3.45pm - Local school children arrive with lanterns 4pm - Lights switch on 4.10pm - Claire Doran (local opera singer) leads traditional Christmas songs. Putney Methodist Church (Gwendolen Avenue, SW15 6SN) is putting on a new musical production to start the Christmas season on Saturday, 2 December. ’Shepherds Arise’ is a new folk opera written by a member of the congregation, celebrating the nativity story in song, dance and poetry. It features new and old music and includes both local and professional performers. It promises to be a magical re-telling of the familiar story to start the season of Advent. There are performances at 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm, and they are both entirely free with no need to book. The performances last about an hour and are suitable for all. More details are on the Church’s website. On Sunday 3 December, Putney School of Art and Design will be holding its Christmas open day and fair on Oxford Road (SW15 2LQ). From 10am to 5pm there will be over 30 arts and crafts stalls by local artisans, refreshments and live music. Then on Wednesday 6 December Southfields will see its Christmas lights being switched on once again by the Mayor of Wandsworth. He will be doing the honours on Replingham Road (outside Krystals Express food market) at 4pm. Afterwards from 4.35 to 5pm there will be performances by Riversdale, Sheringdale and St Michael’s CE School choirs and from 5.15 to 6pm Southfields Academy Musical Collective will provide the entertainment. St Simon’s Parish is holding its Christmas Fair on Saturday 9 December from 12 – 3pm at Our Lady of Victories School Hall on Clarendon Drive. It will have arts & crafts, games, cakes, delicious food, mulled wine and mince pies and a Raffle Prize Draw, with a chance to win prizes donated by local businesses. All are welcome. Also on Saturday, 9 December, at 7.30pm All Saints’ annual Christmas concert is taking place with the 1885 Singers, the church's children’s choir, the Treblemakers, the church choir as well as the first outing of a new choir for teenagers; Putney Voices. They will be singing a range of sacred and secular music for the season by Benjamin Britten, John Rutter & Elizabeth Poston raising money for local charities.
