Within days of Putney High Street breaching the annual pollution limit a Tesco delivery lorry has been spotted breaking the new rules on deliveries.

Stopping parking and/or loading and unloading on the High Street is banned between 7am and 7pm Monday to Saturday. The new rule was introduced on January 11th and any vehicle that flouts the ban is liable to a penalty charge notice (PCN).

Judith Chegwidden, the Chair of Putney Society said, "The 7am-7pm limit on deliveries should help to keep traffic moving in the High Street and anything which achieves this is likely to improve air quality. The council consulted widely and businesses were thought to have signed up - but it seems Tesco (at one of the narrowest points in the High Street) has decided that the ban is irrelevant. It is extraordinary that in a week when Putney High Street hit the news as a result of its poor air quality, that Tesco should consider it acceptable to ignore the delivery ban and contribute to the congestion which is a significant cause of air pollution".

A spokesperson for the Council told PutneySW15, "We will be raising this with Tesco and reminding them of the new rules and their corporate responsibility to support our efforts to improve traffic flow and air quality in Putney High Street".

Local residents said that Tesco have delivered every day throughout this week.

A Tesco’s spokesperson told PutneySW15, "We do our best to be a good neighbour and have reiterated the new delivery restrictions to our depots and drivers."
