Children at St Mary’s School win competition to design air quality poster

Winning pupils at St Mary’s were presented with a school banner showing all the posters entered. The school also received a cheque for £100 to spend on environmental projects.

Environment spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook, pictured above with the children, said: “Well done to the pupils of St Mary’s, who have shown a real understanding of the issues surrounding air pollution. The Mayor’s Air Quality Fund is helping to deliver some valuable work, but it is just part of what we are doing in Wandsworth to clean up the air. We were named as a runner-up in the 2015 National Air Quality Awards for the work we have already done to curb pollution in Putney High Street, and we will continue to look at ways to reduce this problem".

Wandsworth is one of four south London boroughs to take part in a Mayor of London-funded scheme to improve air quality. As well as raising awareness of the issue in schools, it includes actions such as reducing vehicle idling and encouraging people to use less polluting forms of travel.

The two-year scheme is half way through and builds upon action already being taken by Wandsworth, including education work with schoolchildren and motorists, ‘green walls’ at schools to soak up pollution and the introduction of less polluting buses and a ban on rush hour parking by lorries in Putney High Street.
