Former Wandsworth Councillor Liz Stokes has recently passed away.

She represented West Putney ward from 2006 to 2014 and auring her time at the town hall she served on the education overview and scrutiny committee, the licensing sub-committee and standards committee.

Outside of the council, she was a successful lawyer who rose through the profession to be appointed as a judge. She was a graduate of Bristol University and a keen supporter of the arts and the theatre in particular. It was at a theatre that she met her husband David. She was also a proud and active member of amateur dramatic company the Old Stagers, the oldest surviving theatrical society of its kind in the world.

She was a school governor, a keen supporter of Battersea Arts Centre and actively involved for many years with The Samaritans.

Cllr Govindia said, “Liz Stokes was a popular, hard working and dedicated councillor whose whole career was dedicated to public service. She served the people of West Putney with distinction and with great passion and understanding and through her background as a judge she always sought justice and fairness for her constituents. She will be sorely missed by all those who knew her.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family.”
