Ashlone
Wharf - users to see results of architects' studies
Council
promises full consultation on riverside development plans
Architects
working on design options for Ashlone Wharf in Putney
are expected to be ready to discuss their detailed proposals
with boathouse users by Easter. David Morley Architects
have been consulting the users on different ways of tackling
the major structural problems at the former corporation
depot.
The building is currently let to two youth river groups and a local
boatyard.
Council leader Edward Lister said the studies had been
carried out thoroughly with great attention paid to the
concerns of the current user. He stated:
" The council places enormous
value on the work of the youth river club and the sea
cadets who use the building. We also recognise the unique
contribution made by Chas Newens Boatyard to Putney's
riverside and of the course the University Boat Race
which is fast approaching.
"I have written to all three users keeping them
up to date with progress and assuring them of the council's
continued support for their activities."
The architects are also working with Wandsworth and Richmond councils
on proposals for new sporting facilities at Barn Elms.
Their brief is to examine in conjunction with the users three main options
for the boathouse building:
-
essential repairs - making the building safe but
with limited scope for offering improved uses
-
partial refurbishment with some new-build - retaining
the best features of the existing structure and
providing some enhanced facilities
- complete
redevelopment - to a sympathetic design and making
full use of the site to offer enhanced facilities
The
council has said that any options would be the subject
of full consultation - first with the existing users
and then with the local community.
