Crashed through barrier after driver had 'medical episode'
May 10, 2024 The District Line had to be closed this Wednesday afternoon (8 May) after a car crashed through barriers near Southfields station. It is understood that the driver suffered a medical episode at around 2.50pm on Sutherland Grove. They lost control of their vehicle smashing through a fence and coming precariously to a halt at an embankment at the side of the tracks The driver of the vehicle was treated at the scene by paramedics. A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line near Southfields underground station at around 2.55pm today (8 May) following reports that a car had gone through the fences alongside the railway line. “Officers attended, alongside colleagues from the London Fire Brigade, Network Rail, and the Metropolitan Police Service and work is ongoing to clear any obstructions from the tracks.” A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said, “Crews worked to make the scene safe alongside officers from the Metropolitan Police Service. A nearby rail line was closed as a precaution whilst firefighters responded. “The Brigade was called at 1504 and the incident was over for firefighters at 1642.”
London Underground services were suspended between Earl’s Court and Wimbledon but reopened later in the afternoon.
