Wandsworth Welcomes Refugees is inviting local community groups to join March 8, 2024 Wandsworth Welcomes Refugees (WWR) is holding a workshop in Putney this month to increase awareness of the Sanctuary Movement. Community groups in the area are invited to Putney Arts Theatre on Ravenna Road on Friday 22 March to hear how they can build safe and welcoming spaces for refugees into their activities. The workshop, which will be attended by Putney MP Fleur Anderson, will hear from City of Sanctuary about initiatives to welcome refugees and vulnerable migrants. The organisations that make a Sanctuary commitment continue to serve their constituents but develop additional activities and outreach. They cover a wide field and encompass, for example, gardens, schools, theatres, youth groups, food banks, sport clubs, faith-based groups and even health facilities. Community organisations in the borough that have already become a Sanctuary include Tara Theatre, Oxfam Tooting, and the Home Community Café in Earlsfield. Wandsworth Libraries are reaching out to join and will discuss at the workshops what they are doing. Wandsworth Council will discuss details of its plans to become a Borough of Sanctuary and what this means for the Borough and for local organisations. Other speakers will include local refugee organisations, people with lived experience of being a refugee, councillors and news from a borough that is already a Sanctuary. Light refreshments will be served from 1.30pm with the workshop starting at 2pm and concluding at 5pm. Places are limited and must be booked online in advance.
