A 63-year-old man who absconded from Wormwood Scrubs prison has been recaptured in Putney.

After what the Met is describing as a ‘pro-active operation’ working with prison officers, Graham Gomm was back in custody at 8.30am on Saturday (20 July).

He fled on Thursday (18 July) as he was being transferred to Hammersmith Hospital, which is adjacent to the prison, after he said he was unwell. The police were alerted to the escape at 1:18am and immediately visited a number of addresses linked to Gomm.

There was no suggestion that Gomm, who was on remand for burglary offences, was a threat to the public and detectives expressed concern for his medical welfare.

An investigation will continue into the circumstances in which Gomm escaped lawful custody.
