Reports back on her work locally and in parliament
August 29, 2023 Putney’s MP Fleur Anderson has compiled her Annual Report for 2023, which shares updates of her work both locally and in Parliament across the year. The MP sends out a printed copy of the Annual Report to every household in Putney, Roehampton, Southfields and Wandsworth Town and encourages residents to give her feedback and reflect on local priorities for the year ahead. The Annual Report for 2023 included updates on her environmental work, progress on tackling crime locally, protecting the NHS and the cost of living crisis. Since being elected, Ms Anderson says she has helped to resolve over 28,000 resident issues, spoken in Parliament 474 times, tabled 1,143 Parliamentary questions and held over 100 resident advice surgeries. The climate emergency and cleaner air for Putney The MP writes that “We need leaders to take action now to protect life on our planet for generations to come. I regularly push for the Government to go further and faster on cutting emissions, investing in green jobs and renewable energy sources. This issue simply cannot be kicked down the road. “Part of my action on tackling the climate crisis has been campaigning against any expansion to Heathrow Airport. It is already the biggest CO2 emitter in Europe. Another runway is simply not the answer to increasing trade in the UK. Residents living under the flight path should not have to suffer any increase in noise pollution or early morning flights. I founded the Putney Environment Commission, a meeting of local residents who come together to discuss measures we can take to protect our environment. Please do get in touch if you'd like to join the Commission.” On cleaner air for Putney, the MP said, “Air pollution is a huge issue locally, particularly on Putney High Street. I am campaigning for a Clean Air Act in Parliament to tackle air pollution urgently. Locally, I have published a report, following consultations and public meetings, on safer walking and cycling. I have lobbied the Mayor of London and TfL to make all the buses on Putney High Street fully electric and they are making progress.”
Tackling crime and protecting the NHS The Putney MP says she has been working both in Parliament and on the ground with local officers to tackle crime, including holding walkabouts with the new Superintendent David Bannister, hosting public meetings on vehicle theft in West Putney and Thamesfield and asking new Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley to provide more officers, who stay in the local area for longer. Police presence on local streets has subsequently increased and Superintendent David Bannister has reported a recent downtick in vehicle thefts. The MP says she will continue to meet regularly to focus on increased CCTV use, police presence and crime prevention. She is continuing to ensure that the Urgent Treatment Centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital stays open. Recently she celebrated the 75 th birthday of the NHS and next month is embarking on a 55 mile charity bike ride with fellow Wandsworth MP Dr Rosena Allin-Khan to raise money for St George’s childcare department. The MP expressed deep concerns about the current state of the NHS, with striking doctors, exhausted staff, ambulances queueing outside A&E and year long waiting lists for operations. The MP committed to continuing to fight for a publicly funded, properly managed and well resourced NHS for decades to come. Addressing the housing and cost of living crises Ms Anderson is very concerned about rising rents and cost of mortgages in Putney and she has demanded that the Government take urgent action urgent action. Mortgage rate increases are also making private renting increasingly unstable in Putney. Renting is too insecure and too expensive. The MP has demanded an end to no-fault evictions and a Renters Reform Bill to make renting more fair, and supported more than 60 families facing homelessness over the past 12 months. Ms Anderson has also been campaigning on the cladding crisis and demanding leasehold reform. The financial and emotional toll of the cladding crisis has been terrible. Whilst the MP has made significant progress, she writes that she will not stop until all residents are protected by law from paying huge sums of money to fix housing problems they did not cause. She says cost of living crisis is worsening across the country, and the Putney MP recently raised over half a tonne of donations for Putney foodbanks as part of her ‘Putney Gives’ campaign. The MP also listed some of her ‘wins’ in 2023, writing:
