An Exhibition of The Mugs of Putney | |
A rare chance to see a unique collection of local memorabilia Hugh Thompson with some of his mug collection April 21, 2023 Hugh Thompson has been collecting Putney Memorabilia since he first moved to the area 45 years ago. There is now a chance to see his unique collection of mugs at the Disraeli Road Library until the end of May. The display follows on from an earlier exhibition three years ago of Hugh’s collection of Putney postcards. The mugs include two from when he lived in Dryburgh Road, one celebrates the road’s centenary in 1990 and is wonderfully dated with a Concorde. The other was when the street celebrated 50 years since VE day. From Festing Road where Hugh now lives there are mugs celebrating Jubilee street parties in 2012 and 2022 and for this year’s Coronation. Also last year there was a street boules competition and Hugh had a Mr Benn Plays Boules mug made. There are three mugs celebrating the Burne Jones windows at All Saints on the Common and one from St Mary’s commemorating the new bells in 1972. There is a mug Hugh had designed for the Putney Society reading “Putney Home of the Boat Race”. While in Australia he found a mug involving the 22 bus which comes from an Australian children’s story. A wonderful mug from the Friends of Richmond Park glories in its ancient oaks. An artist’s mug celebrates Wandsworth Park and as an extra there are very rare Putney and Wimbledon tourist mementoes.
