Trees will form part for the Queen’s Green Canopy

A new orchard is to be planted on Putney Lower Common this winter and local people are being invited to get involved.
The orchard is being planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy – a tree planting campaign launched as part of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.
The scheme has been extended until March 2023 and the orchard will now be a tribute to her life and service following a suggestion from a Putney resident.
The Commons Conservators hope that, once the trees have established and yielding a good crop of fruit, they can partner with another local charity that can make use of the fruit that the orchard will provide.
12 trees will be planted, each a different variety of apple, pear and cherry. The trees are available to sponsor and could be a unique memorial or dedication as part of an anniversary. Donations will help with the planting of the orchard, its protection and its care over the years and will also help enhance Putney Lower Common.

Supporters will be invited to a tree planting later this year.
The initiative follows a successful appeal for the refurbishment of the bridge over Beverley Brook on Putney Lower Common which has now reopened thanks to donations from local people.
