The University of Roehampton London is planning to begin two new education short courses for teaching assistants early next year.

The courses, titled ‘Supporting Successful Learning’ and ‘Improving Outcomes in Special and Inclusive Education’, will run for 10 weeks beginning on 9 January and classes will take place online. The courses aim to help meet the needs of educators and pupils who which have faced significant disruption to ways of learning and teaching due to the Covid-19 pandemic over the past two years.

In developing these courses, the University of Roehampton London worked with three local employers, Teach Wimbledon School Direct Alliance, Ricards Lodge School, Wimbledon and Perseid Special School, Morden, to ensure that they fit the requirements of teachers and pupils.

The new courses are part of the University’s delivery of the Lifelong Loan Entitlement (LLE), which will enable learners to retrain through shorter courses at UK universities and colleges supported by bespoke loans. In addition, they hope to support the UK g overnment’s education recovery plan in UK schools, placing new emphasis on supporting children with special educational needs and disabled children.

Earlier this year, The University of Roehampton London had been granted £63,200 in new funding from the Office for Students (OfS) to help launch the two courses. It is one of twenty-two institutions to be awarded funding by the OfS in partnership with the Department for Education (DfE) to help students develop skills needed by employers and the economy through flexible learning.

Dr Richard Keogh, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research and External Engagement at the University of Roehampton, said, “These innovative new short courses, designed alongside our local partner schools, will ensure teaching assistants are provided with the training our local boroughs will need to support students in the years ahead.”

Professor Peter Flew, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic Portfolio Development and Dean of the School of Education at the University of Roehampton, said, “Our partnerships with local schools has led us to recognise the need to provide additional training and development opportunities to ensure teaching assistants feel empowered and equipped to best support their pupils. These two new courses utilise existing modules which form part of our undergraduate degrees, and will provide key skills which will have an immediate impact on the quality of education provision.”

More information and details on how to apply can be found here and here . The University also offers BA Education Practice, a three year undergraduate degree which is aimed at teaching assistants who would like to complete a degree alongside their work commitments.
