Putney charity supports young people in and coming out of care
Tom didn't have to figure out the challenges of leaving care on his own
November 19, 2024
Putney-based children’s charity St Christopher’s has launched its annual Christmas appeal, to raise funds to try to ensure young people in care don’t face the future alone.
This year’s appeal highlights Tom’s story. When he left the charity’s care at 18, the thought of living alone was terrifying to him. Suddenly, the safety net he’d known for 4 years was gone, and he had no idea where to start. But with help, Tom didn’t have to figure it all out alone. From helping him learn how to manage his finances and pay bills, to offering emotional support during difficult days, St Christopher’s were there every step of the way - turning those moments of crisis into manageable challenges. Sometimes, all Tom needed was a phone call.
St Christopher’s has more than 150 years of experience caring for children and young people. It provides services and aims to create brighter futures for children and young people in care and leaving care, and those in fostering or on the edge of care.
Ned Wall, Life Skills & Participation Manager at St Christopher’s says, "Tom’s story reflects the compassionate care at the heart of our mission, empowering young people to discover their strengths and build the confidence to thrive, with our support extending beyond their time in our care.
"We’re excited to kick off this year’s Christmas Appeal and invite everyone to join us in creating more inspiring experiences like Tom’s.”
This Christmas, a gift of £35 can help provide life-changing support to more young people in their journey from care to independence.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.
Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
