A critically acclaimed play about the ‘Putney Bridge Pusher’ is to be performed less than two miles from where the incident occurred.

Irish playwright Sonya Kelly’s Once Upon a Bridge examines the incident in 2017 in which a man callously pushes a woman in front of a bus apparently for slowing him down as he was jogging. Her life was saved by a quick thinking bus driver and the three protagonists appear in the play.

Originally staged in The Druid Theatre in Galway and being performed in London for the first time, the play aims to tell a tale of human triumph and frailty and was described by The Guardian’s reviewer as ‘compelling … delicately uplifting’

It will be directed by Lydia Sax with Muireann Gallen in the role of ‘a woman’, Sam Heap as the jogger and Andre Bullock as the bus driver.

Performances are taking place from 17 April to 21 April at the OSO Arts Centre in Barnes with performances at 7.30pm.

Tickets can be purchased online and cost £19 or £17.10 for centre members.

Once Upon a Bridge contains occasional use of strong language.

Although the original incident was caught on CCTV, despite a major police investigation with a number of suspects questioned, the jogger was never identified. He is described as a white man, aged early to thirties, with brown eyes and short brown hair. He was wearing a light grey t-shirt and dark blue shorts.
