Leighton: Follower & Breaker of Rules – A Talk by Sarah Ciacci |
|
Lecture hosted by The Arts Society South West London
May 17, 2024 The next talk to be hosted by the Arts Society South West London will be given by Sarah Ciacci on the subject of Lord Leighton. Frederic, Lord Leighton, was a bastion of the Establishment and of Academic Art in the late 1800s. However, he was also an experimental artist who explored the possibilities of the radical Aesthetic Movement which adopted critic Walter Pater’s idea that ‘All the Arts aspire to the condition of Music’. The lecture looks at his Academic Paintings, his Aesthetic Movement works and his pioneering work to raise the status of the decorative arts; in particular the collecting of Islamic tiles which are displayed in his purpose-built studio-home. The lecture explores how he was both a follower and a breaker of art rules. Sarah Ciacci has an MA in Modernist Art from University College London and has been an art specialist Blue Badge Guide for London since 2008. She runs tours, gives talks, and trains Blue Badge Guides for the National Gallery and other galleries. She is also a gallery educator, working for the Magic Lantern, and taught art history at Richmond University for a decade. This talk takes place on Monday 10 June at 8pm at Dryburgh Hall. The talk will also be available to watch on zoom and you can find details details of how to register on the society’s web site. If you have never attended an Arts Society lecture before you are urged to join and find out about your local Arts Society. Visit the society’s website for further details.
