Seeking contractor for the redevelopment of the 17 acre site
The comprehensive redevelopment of the Roehampton area moved a step closer this week as Wandsworth Council opened the bidding for a contractor to take on the project.
The scheme aims to improve the post war housing estate on the border of Richmond Park and promises a range of new shops and community facilities built, including a leisure centre, community centre, park and library.
The Council say the estate’s listed buildings would be sensitively refurbished and enhanced.
The plans include approximately 1,100 new homes which will be built over the course of the programme as well as additional social rent, affordable and private housing.
Every directly affected council tenant and owner occupier is being offered a new property on the estate.
A range of employment, skills training, mentoring, health and youth support initiatives are also being focussed on the estate to help local people take full advantage of the area’s growth.
The launch of the tendering process, which is being managed by Bilfinger GVA, comes after three years of consultation with the estates’ community over how the area could improve and develop.
Bilfinger GVA is also supporting the council in finding a development partner for the regeneration of the Winstanley and York Road estate in Battersea.
Ravi Govindia, leader of Wandsworth Council, said, “This project will preserve the best qualities of this unique post war housing estate while unlocking its full potential as a thriving mixed use neighbourhood with a superb range of local services and shops. It has the potential to provide hundreds of new homes, including high quality social rent and affordable properties our local residents need."
