Police and lifeboat crews were called to Putney Bridge at around 8.30am this morning, Wednesday February 13 after receiving reports that an elderly man had fallen into the Thames.

The man, who was reportedly in his seventies, was pulled from the river at 8.50am and taken to Putney Pier, where ambulance crews found his heart had stopped and battled to save him.

He was taken by ambulance to Charing Cross Hospital, where further efforts were made to save his life, but he was then pronounced dead.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman says: "Extensive efforts were made to save him both at the scene and at the hospital."

Police say formal identification of the man has yet to take place and his next of kin to be informed.

They add that enquiries continue, but his death is not being treated as suspicious.
