Don't bother with the West End & disrupted tubes - everything you need is in Putney
PutneySW15.com has put together a shopping guide which exclusively features presents offered by SW15 businesses. There's no need to traipse into town when gifts for every member of the family can be purchased right here on your doorstep.
Putney Town Centre Manager, Nicola Grant said:
"No need to fight with the crowds in Oxford Street, Putney has lots of great gifts available on the High Street, in the Exchange shopping centre and in both Upper and Lower Richmond Road. Putney residents can play a big part in supporting the local economy this Christmas by shopping locally wherever possible. Support Super Saturday on Saturday 6th December where lots of independents in Putney will be offering special deals."
Discerning shoppers will find great value and choice in our local shops without the hassle and fuss of going to the West End. In fact, many local businesses offer home delivery, too, so you can shop from the comfort of your own home, safe in the knowledge that you are 'being green'.
And we've even done some of the hard work for you. Below is listed some of the very best that's on offer in the local area for the festive season.
A recent survey conducted by Friends Life has found that UK shoppers will each spend on average £248.82 on Christmas presents this year. The most common price bracket is between £101 and £200 (25%), though 14% plan to spend £500 or more. Londoners plan to spend an average of £240.90
16% of people plan to spend between £1 and £100 on Christmas presents, with just 3% looking to spend nothing at all. Women account for a larger proportion of Christmas spending. They will spend (£259.39) 9% more on Christmas presents than men (£237.05).
Who spends what?!
15% of women spend £500+ on Christmas presents compared to just 12% of men. 18 to 24-year-olds are expecting to spend £145.07 each on Christmas presents, with 6% planning to spend nothing at all. Whereas 25 to 30-year-olds are expecting to spend £229.2 each on Christmas presents, with 9% spending £500+.
With matuurity comes the greater spening power; 31 to 39-year-olds are expecting to spend £269.36 each on Christmas presents, with 27% spending between £201 - £300 whilst people aged 40+ are expecting to spend £266.19 each on Christmas presents, with 16% spending £500+
PutneySW15.com are always happy to give our support to locally owned shops, businesses, artists and artisans. If there is any provider of local gifts that you think we should feature let us know. To add your company please contact editor@putneysw15.com or call 020 8932 8295.
A time for giving........
With Christmas shopping upon us we hope the high street will be buzzing with generous activity. Warren would like to take this festive opportunity to encourage Putney residents to celebrate local independent business.
In 2015 we will be celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the first Warren office opening in Putney. We are particularly mindful of the corporate competition and their ability through economies of scale to, on occasion, offer what appears, very superficially, to be better value. However, we also know that in both what we do and also what our fellow independent retailers and service providers do there is very real, and in some cases incalculable, value to an independent owners’ approach to service and product quality. With this in mind Warren would heartily encourage all Putney residents to investigate and champion their local independent businesses and ensure that they spend plenty of Christmas money with them so that they continue to be able to provide a superior service and easy access to high-quality products on our doorstep.

Deck the Halls ........ It is that time of year again!!! Trees are dotted around Putney, the current thinking is that Blue Spruce is the tree most likely to hold onto its needles all Christmas. They are bushy and have a blue tint to their thick needles.
The more traditional Norway Spruce is now regarded as the cheaper choice and the most likely to shed its fine and spiky needles at the least provocation. (Don't forget you can leave your tree for recycling after Christmas outside your house - click here for details.)

Have yourself a very healthy Christmas....
Beware the morning after
You could be over the legal limit many hours after your last drink, even if it's the 'morning after'. Sleep, coffee and cold showers don't help to sober you up - time is the only way to get alcohol out of your system.
There is no excuse for drink driving
"I can handle my drink."
Alcohol affects everybody's driving for the worse. It creates a feeling of overconfidence, makes judging distance and speed more difficult and slows your reactions so it takes longer to stop
"I'm only going down the road."
A large proportion of all drink drive crashes occur within three miles of the start of the journey.
If you're planning to drink alcohol, plan how to get home without driving
Options include agreeing on a designated driver, saving a taxi number to your phone, or finding out about public transport routes and times before you go out.
Don't offer an alcoholic drink to someone you know is planning to drive
Even if you're not driving, you can help reduce the number of people who are killed and injured every year by drink driving.
Don't accept a lift from a driver you know has drunk alcohol |
