Efforts to raise money for Malawi are part of this year’s Christian Aid Week, which runs from 14 May to 20 May . The Putney MP hosted the Christian Aid Week 2023 reception in Westminster and was joined by Reverend Brutus Green, Vicar of St Margaret’s Church, calling on the Government to prioritise justice for those suffering on the front line of the climate crisis. In Putney, the PMC Singers is planning to hold an informal teatime concert as part of fundraising efforts for Christian Aid week. The free event is taking place at Putney Methodist Church, Gwendolen Avenue (SW15 6SN) on Saturday 20 May from 3-4pm. The group will be joined by a number of its friends who will also be performing. St Mary’s Church Putney is hosting a Charity Car Wash on Saturday 20 May from 10am to 1pm in the All Saints’ School Playground, SW15 1HL to raise money for Christian Aid Week 2023, as well as a Concert and Cake Sale on Sunday 18th June at 11.30am in St Mary’s Church, Putney High Street SW15 1SN. The focus of Christian Aid Week 2023 is on supporting families in Malawi, who campaigners say, are paying a harsh price for the global cost of living and climate crises. Ms Anderson said, “Moments like this offer a great opportunity for us to do what we can to help our neighbours in developing countries. We all face challenges on a daily basis but some communities are paying a terrible price for the cost of living and climate crises. I am pleased to be supporting Christian Aid, alongside churches together in Putney.” Lee Ngirazie, Christian Aid’s Climate Justice Coordinator in Malawi, said, “The impact of Cyclone Freddy in Malawi has been devastating in the sense that its magnitude has been the worst over the past three cyclones. Apart from claiming over 676 lives and displacing over 650 households, it has also destroyed crops, livestock, livelihoods and infrastructure including schools, houses, health facilities, power lines, roads, bridges just to mention some.” All kinds of events will be taking place to raise money and make a difference to communities where severe weather has ruined crops and unscrupulous middlemen have taken hard-earned profits from those trying to farm the land. Patrick Watt, Christian Aid’s CEO said, “Christian Aid Week is a moment in the year when people across the UK, in every parliamentary constituency, give, take action, and pray in support of Christian Aid’s work to end the injustice of poverty. In the current economic climate, the solidarity and compassion of the British public for their global neighbours is more important than ever. “Christian Aid Week 2023 focuses on rural communities in Malawi, whose efforts to break free from poverty are being frustrated by unfair prices for their crops, and the intensifying effects of climate change. Many families are having to choose which child to send to school, or which sickness to treat. Young people’s futures are being put on the line. “However, change is possible. We are extremely grateful for the extraordinary work of our supporters and the backing of people like Fleur Anderson MP. The actions taken and gifts given this week will change lives. “Christian Aid Week is a powerful statement that we are united in the hope that a better world is possible.” If you can’t make it to the charity car wash at All Saints’ School you can donate to the Churches Together in Putney and Roehampton fundraising effort on this link.
