Fleur Anderson Marks Four Years as MP for Putney

Releases a Top 10 in 2023 video of her campaign highlights

Fleur Anderson MP has marked her fourth anniversary as MP for Putney by releasing a ‘Top 10 in 2023’ video to highlight local issues she has campaigned on.

She initially made national headlines after her election in 2019, as the only Labour candidate in the country under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn to gain a seat from the Conservative Party.

She has since been promoted by Keir Starmer to Shadow Minister for Northern Ireland in September this year, serving under Hilary Benn MP as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

She also led several debates in Parliament, arguing for the reopening of Hammersmith Bridge, and another urging MPs to reject the expansion of Heathrow Airport.

Number one on her list is the work done on the cladding crisis in which she helped get remedial work paid for and completed at six blocks in her constituency.

Second, she lists her persistent campaigning for a full reopening of Hammersmith Bridge which she has raised ‘again and again’ in Parliament, then she highlights her roles in the campaign for a lift at East Putney station and against the All-England Lawn Tennis Club’s plans for buildings on Wimbledon Park.

Fifth on the list is her work to secure more GP appointment slots and fund raising for St. George’s Hospital. Sixth is her visit to Pakistan and publication of a report on the persecution of the Ahmadiyya community. Her successful wet wipes campaign comes in at number seven with the list completed with mentions of her work with foodbanks, on local policing and securing more safe secure housing.

Ms Anderson said, “Representing Putney residents in the Houses of Parliament is an honour that I do not take for granted, and I have now spoken over 600 times in the Chamber. I’ve had a huge number of local wins this year – Wandsworth’s Labour-led Council rejected AELTC proposals for Wimbledon Park, we got East Putney Station onto TfL’s list for a feasibility study for a lift after we gathered 3,000 signatures from local people. I’ve campaigned for better access to GP appointments, raised £3,000 for St George’s Children Services and two thirds of a tonne of donations for local foodbanks. This action on the ground goes alongside campaigning for change in Parliament, and I am delighted that amongst other wins, Rishi Sunak confirmed this year that he will back my campaign to ban plastic in wet wipes following a final public consultation.

“One of the most pressing issues this year has been the conflict in Israel and Palestine, and I am horrified that we are going into the end of the year witnessing the ongoing loss of civilian life in Gaza. I have written to the Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron to ask him to demand a cessation of hostilities, the return of all Israeli hostage, the right of return for the 2 million displaced Gazans and an end to the appalling loss of life in both Israel and Palestine, including thousands of children. Thank you to all the Putney residents who have written into me on this issue – please be assured that I share your horror and commitment to do everything in our power to see this conflict end as quickly as possible.”

“One of the main issues constituents raise with me in Putney are the quality of our air due to traffic congestion, caused by the closure of Hammersmith Bridge in 2019. We need this vital infrastructure reopened to decongest our streets, but the Government won’t pay up – we need them to properly fund the bridge to reopen to vehicles.

“I know that residents in Putney want change. They want an economy that works for families, NHS waiting lists down, energy and food bills that don’t skyrocket and inflation under control. I’m looking forward to 2024, continuing to serve the people of Putney, Roehampton, Southfields and Wandsworth Town in Parliament and taking our campaign to the doorstep to win the next Labour Government for the country.”
