Fleur Anderson is urging Roehampton residents to give their views on the council’s plan for the redevelopment of the Alton Estate.

Wandsworth Council has unveiled the very first stages of its new plans to replace those drawn up by the previous Conservative administration which were then abandoned.

The MP for Putney is encouraging all residents to read about the plans, get in touch with the team and attend one of a series of drop-in sessions that will be held as well as visiting Roehampton Library to see a display of the proposals there.

Residents need to be at the heart of this process. Please make sure to let your neighbours know and get involved in the process of shaping the Alton’s future.”

All Alton residents should have received a booklet containing the initial plans, reviewing options for renovations to existing housing and to explore any potential to improve thermal efficiency.

The Alton Renewal Plan includes proposals to build over 650 flats, of which 58% will be classed as affordable. There would be a net addition of 130 council flats as well as the replacement of with 140 replacement council flats which the council would be built to high quality, sizing and environmental standards.

The plans also include a renewed high street with increased shopping, changes to public spaces and a Roehampton Community Hub on the corner of Roehampton Lane and Danebury Avenue, with a new youth club and library.

Residents are expected to be balloted on the proposals in 2025 before the scheme gets underway.

The Labour MP attended a drop-in event at Roehampton Leisure Centre on Saturday 13 July, speaking with residents and finding out more about the Council’s plans.

Afterwards she said,“We need a plan for the Alton that brings together everything a community needs – safe and comfortable housing, a thriving high street, cheap and reliable transport, beautiful open spaces for families to enjoy together, jobs and opportunities for young people, youth services, libraries.

“Alton residents had been so let down by the old Conservative plans that didn’t put the community at the heart of the estate’s future. I’m delighted that Labour-led Wandsworth Council are taking their new plans to residents and was pleased to attend a drop-in event to find out more on Saturday. I’m really excited to hear what local people think of the plans.”
